The product info that matters to me:

  • They use electric motors and linkage arms, so the moving parts are exposed to road salt, mud, and winter grime. (Which, honestly, is the first thing I check before ordering.)
  • Mounting is application-specific. You don’t “make one universal set work.” You order for the vehicle’s year, cab configuration, and door setup.
  • They tuck away when closed, which helps with ground clearance and keeps the steps from catching on obstacles off-road.

I’m not an engineer, so I can’t speak to the durability of the motor internals over a 200,000-mile service life. From a purchasing perspective, the question is whether the added convenience and clearance are worth the higher price and the extra electrical parts to maintain. For our drivers, the answer has been yes. For a truck that never leaves pavement, fixed steps might make more sense.

Rough Country Jeep JK: What Does the Catalog Cover?

The Jeep Wrangler JK (2007-2018) is one of the platforms Rough Country has covered for years. That includes lift kits, control arms, track bars, bumpers, fender flares, and other bolt-on parts. If someone asks for a “Rough Country Jeep JK” starting point, I usually point to their 2.5- or 3.25-inch lift kits, depending on tire size and whether the customer wants to keep their factory ride comfortable.

The important part, and this is where I’ve learned the hard way: JK is a wide platform. Within 2007-2018, there were different axle options, brake packages, and trim levels. So I always check fitment against the VIN or door sticker before ordering. The catalog listing and the real truck can disagree, especially if someone swapped axles or added a heavier bumper.

Why Order Power Boards Instead of Fixed Steps?

Because total cost of ownership can be lower than a fixed step, even when the invoice total is higher. Fixed steps are simpler and cheaper. There are no motors, no wiring, no control module. But if the step hangs below the rocker line, it can catch on obstacles. In our fleet, that meant bent brackets and scratched door sills. It also meant drivers had to take a big step around a fixed bar. On a truck with a 2.5-inch lift and 35-inch tires, that becomes a real ergonomics issue.

Power boards solved both issues. They’re out of the way when closed, and they drop to about step height when open. The risk is that a motor or sensor fails down the road. I kept asking myself: are the electrical parts worth the convenience for a 200,000-mile work truck? We tried one, then another, and the reaction from drivers was enough to make it a no-brainer for the rest of the fleet.

That’s TCO. The cheapest solution on paper isn’t always the cheapest solution after installers, rework, and driver complaints are added to the spreadsheet.

Floor Jack Types: What a Truck Shop Actually Needs

If you’re working on stock cars and trucks, a standard 2-ton or 3-ton floor jack is enough. If you’re working on lifted trucks and Jeeps, the jack type matters more than the tonnage rating. A bottle jack and a scissor jack are not floor jacks, but they’re worth knowing: scissor jacks are emergency equipment, and bottle jacks can lift high when there’s enough clearance. For daily shop use, a trolley-style floor jack is usually the more stable choice.

  • Low-profile floor jack. Sits low and gets under cars with tight ground clearance. It’s not just for lowered sports cars—stock-height SUVs with air dams can be annoying without one.
  • Tall-reach floor jack. Reaches the frame rails on a truck with a lift kit. This is the one that saves our techs from stacking wood blocks under the saddle (which I really don’t like seeing).
  • Steel floor jack. The standard, heavier shop unit. Fine when it stays in one bay.
  • Aluminum floor jack. Lighter, more expensive, easier to throw in a service truck. Good for mobile work.

I’m not a suspension engineer, so I won’t tell you a specific brand to buy. I can tell you that the cheapest steel jack we bought sits in the corner because it doesn’t have enough lift height for the trucks we actually service. The tall-reach jack we bought later was more expensive upfront and way cheaper in total cost.

Dashcam With Parking Sensor: What to Look For

A dashcam with parking sensor (often listed as “parking mode” or “buffered parking mode”) uses a motion or impact sensor to start recording when something happens while the vehicle is parked. It’s not the same as having sensors that help you park. It’s a security feature, and it only works if the camera has power while the ignition is off.

  • Buffered parking mode. The camera records a few seconds before an event, not just after. That matters when you need to prove who hit you.
  • Voltage cutoff. This prevents the camera from draining the vehicle battery. For us, it’s a deal-breaker.
  • G-sensor sensitivity settings. If it’s too sensitive, you’ll get useless footage from every passing truck. If it’s too low, it misses the actual hit.
  • Hardwire kit. Most parking modes need a fuse-tap hardwire installation. A plug-in USB port may not keep the camera in parking mode.

From a purchasing view, the most expensive thing a dashcam can do is drain a battery and strand a driver. A cheap camera without voltage protection is not cheap.

When Was the First Backup Camera Put in a Car?

Depends on whether you mean concept, production, or North American production. The idea showed up in the 1956 Buick Centurion show car, which used a rear camera and a dashboard television screen. It never went into production. The first production car to offer a rear camera is usually credited to the 1991 Toyota Soarer in Japan. In the U.S., the 2002 Infiniti Q45 is the one most often cited as the first factory backup camera.

The bigger date for fleet buyers: NHTSA finalized FMVSS No. 111 in 2014, and by May 2018, nearly all new vehicles under 10,000 pounds had to have a rear visibility system. So the answer isn’t just a history fact—it’s also a reason why newer trucks don’t need a retrofit camera for compliance.

I didn’t know this until an accountant asked me why we were adding cameras to trucks that already had them (surprise, surprise: some of our 2017 models predated the requirement).

What Should I Verify Before Ordering Any of This?

Three things, in order:

  1. Fitment. Check the exact model year, trim, cab style, and drivetrain. “Jeep JK” isn’t a single shape, and a 2018 pickup can be a regular cab, extended cab, or crew cab.
  2. Install requirements. Does it need an adapter harness? Does it require cutting? Does it need a fuse tap? Include those parts in the quote before comparing it to another option.
  3. Total cost, not list price. Shipping, missing-harness fees, downtime while a tech waits for parts, and the cost of doing the job twice all belong in the decision.

That last one is the one I got wrong early in this job. I found a lower quote for a different power step product, ordered it, and the harness didn’t match our truck’s wiring. The “good price” disappeared after return shipping, a restocking fee, and a second installation. The lesson: compare the product’s total cost, not the temptation of a cheaper SKU.
